Eighth Report : A Sustainable Competitiveness Strategy for Egypt (2012)

This Eighth Egyptian Competitiveness Report (ECR) presents a framework for a comprehensive economic strategy that could inform public debate and guide policy makers and government officials. This is the culmination of the work of the last seven volumes of the ECR. It combines the policy recommendations and priorities highlighted in past years and builds upon them to create a single comprehensive framework for action. The strategy presented here informs debate, encourages dialogue, and presents a new vision for Egypt’s future, unshackled from previous constraints. In addition, the strategy proposes projects and quick-wins initiatives by which Egypt can overcome its economic difficulties from an inflated public debt and a high budget deficit that could require austerity measures and enhance its economic growth. This report is of special importance due to the fact it came out after the January 25, 2011 Revolution, and after Egypt’s first free presidential elections. It proposes projects that could provide equal opportunities in access to employment in order to enhance the standard of living of Egyptians. It proposes reforms that will attract FDI and upgrade the skills of Egyptian human capital. The proposed strategy will help Egypt regain its regional position as a hub for skills and creativity, and improve its competitiveness on the domestic as well as on the international level, ensuring inclusive, balanced and sustainable growth.
